A Spanish Sunrise, by Boo Walker, was a surprisingly absorbing read。 The main character is a widower, raising his eight-year-old daughter。 Dad and daughter are both struggling to accept the loss。 Dad is also overwhelmed with single parenting and insulating his daughter from pain。 They have an unexpected opportunity to visit Spain, where they meet family they didn’t know they had。 Walker’s pacing and plot moves forward with enough speed so that I did not want to stop reading。 Gorgeous descriptio A Spanish Sunrise, by Boo Walker, was a surprisingly absorbing read。 The main character is a widower, raising his eight-year-old daughter。 Dad and daughter are both struggling to accept the loss。 Dad is also overwhelmed with single parenting and insulating his daughter from pain。 They have an unexpected opportunity to visit Spain, where they meet family they didn’t know they had。 Walker’s pacing and plot moves forward with enough speed so that I did not want to stop reading。 Gorgeous descriptions of nature, an estate, olive oil manufacturing combine so that I found myself toying with visiting Spain。 The characters, even the minor ones, are multi-dimensional and nuanced。 I did get a little frustrated with the main character’s “one step forward, two steps back” refusal to advance。 The daughter is a tad close to annoyingly precocious。 But I am old to enough to know that grief is a singular process, and each person travels that terrible territory in their own way。This is the first novel of Boo Walker that I have read。 I am certainly going to look for others。 Given the setting and circumstances, this is an unusual family drama。 I recommend that you give it a try。 Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for the opportunity to read a digital ARC。 It was a pleasure。 4。5 stars。 。。。more

Sweet book! Tender story from a man’s perspective of grief and raising his daughter, and how things that really matter can get covered up with sadness。 Loved the characters in this story and the believable ending。 Music is a big part of this story and I absolutely loved that!! Very big shout out to the narrator!! ❤️Recommend!

Baxter has been navigating life on his own with his daughter Mia for three years since the tragic death of his beloved wife Sophia。 It’s mostly been a struggle and they are both existing more than living。 However when Mia begins to struggle with her behaviour at school and starts having nightmares, Baxter knows he needs help。Then out of the blue a DNA test links them with previously unknown family in Spain and a spur of the moment holiday to meet the family changes everything for them。I absolute Baxter has been navigating life on his own with his daughter Mia for three years since the tragic death of his beloved wife Sophia。 It’s mostly been a struggle and they are both existing more than living。 However when Mia begins to struggle with her behaviour at school and starts having nightmares, Baxter knows he needs help。Then out of the blue a DNA test links them with previously unknown family in Spain and a spur of the moment holiday to meet the family changes everything for them。I absolutely loved this read, the characters are so likeable and I really felt the grief of a loving father doing his best for his young daughter while just managing to keep his business ticking over。 Being a lover of travel I really enjoyed the Spanish link and meeting the interesting and complicated Spanish family, each with their own story and secrets。I found this book difficult to put down, it was enjoyable from start to finish, yes I shed a few tears, but also smiled lots too。Thanks for a great read。 。。。more

While I did enjoy this story, I found the main character's decision to wipe his wife's memory away to protect his daughter, non-sensical。 And it was repetitive for most of the book。 The descriptions of Spain and the olive oil industry really interesting and it makes me want to visit there。 While I did enjoy this story, I found the main character's decision to wipe his wife's memory away to protect his daughter, non-sensical。 And it was repetitive for most of the book。 The descriptions of Spain and the olive oil industry really interesting and it makes me want to visit there。 。。。more

This is the story of a man with a young daughter who is trying to get both of them through the grief following the violent death of his wife。 He had been making a breakthrough as a musician when this wife was randomly shot in a shopping center parking lot。 He subsequently quit playing and bought a construction company so he could be home for his daughter。 Through a DNA link in Ancestry he is approached by a woman in Spain, who thinks she is the birth mother of his late wife。 She really wants to This is the story of a man with a young daughter who is trying to get both of them through the grief following the violent death of his wife。 He had been making a breakthrough as a musician when this wife was randomly shot in a shopping center parking lot。 He subsequently quit playing and bought a construction company so he could be home for his daughter。 Through a DNA link in Ancestry he is approached by a woman in Spain, who thinks she is the birth mother of his late wife。 She really wants to meet her granddaughter and he reluctantly agrees to take her over there for a visit。 The Spanish family has their own secrets, but the description of that family and their olive farm is the best part of the novel。 What I didn't care for was the way the grieving father chose to deal with grief, which was to not speak about his late wife and try to keep his daughter from thinking about her。 Fortunately the Spanish family eventually is able to get them to start talking about her, and encourages him to start playing guitar and songwriting。 3。5 stars 。。。more

Perfectly Poignant。 This is ultimately a story of family and healing, and yet again Walker uses both the situations and the settings to combine to work great magic in his storytelling。 The base setup turns out to be something that is almost ripped from the headlines, and while some fiction authors can and have gone a more preachy route with the topic, Walker instead eschews the politics completely and looks at the very human side of what actually happens in such a situation。 Truly an excellent w Perfectly Poignant。 This is ultimately a story of family and healing, and yet again Walker uses both the situations and the settings to combine to work great magic in his storytelling。 The base setup turns out to be something that is almost ripped from the headlines, and while some fiction authors can and have gone a more preachy route with the topic, Walker instead eschews the politics completely and looks at the very human side of what actually happens in such a situation。 Truly an excellent work, and one that this reader at least could easily imagine Luke Bryan playing the leading role。。。 should Bryan ever decide to make such a career move。 Very much recommended。 。。。more
